Not Love, Actually… How to combat fraud and broken hearts on the internet

14 Feb 2024

Join us this Valentines day with speakers Michael O’Doherty BL on 'Online Anonymity' and 'The Liability of Platforms', with Idriss Kechida, EU Head of Privacy for the Match Group (match.com, Tinder, Hinge, Plenty of Fish), on 'The Legal Issues Surrounding the World of Online Dating Apps'.

Michael O’Doherty BL will introduce the various types of fraud that take place online, and discuss two overarching issues;

Online anonymity: why it exists, how it fuels fraudulent behaviour, and what can be done about it.

The liability of platforms: can the apps, and social media platforms, on which the activity takes place be held liable the unlawful activity under data protection, privacy and defamation laws?

Idriss Kechida, EU Head of Privacy for the Match Group (match.com, Tinder, Hinge, Plenty of Fish), navigates the shady world of Cupid stunts, and the legal issues surrounding the world of online dating apps. What can go wrong? Why does it occur? What can be done to combat it?

Our final speaker will be announced shortly and they will discuss financial scams, how to fight back and how to deal with the most common scams on the internet;

  • Counterfeit goods

  • Fake reviews

  • Phishing by text or email

  • Fake celebrity endorsements

  • What are the platforms doing to combat this?

Session will be followed by a Q&A and a drinks reception in the Sheds, Distillery Building.
